BDCP’s December 2010 Community Dance Workshop

Baltimore Dance Crews Project (BDCP) is a non-profit dedicated to providing after school hip hop dance programming for Baltimore area youth that supports student achievement, builds community, encourages creativity and promotes a healthy lifestyle. Founded by Brian Gerardo and Cynthia Chavez in 2008, BDCP hosts a number of events throughout the year including a monthly community dance workshop that is open to the public. This month, the workshop included classes from Andrew Ton (DOP and BDCP), Chris Munar (Ajnin Precizion, Tito Boy Scouts, Major Def, BDCP) and Anna Jung (Culture Shock DC, GnC Crew, BDCP). The class was held at Baltimore Freedom Academy on Saturday, December 11th.

After paying only $3 for the workshop, Cynthia Chavez introduced herself and welcomed everyone to the BDCP family. We gathered around in a circle and everyone introduced themselves by saying their name, age and what school they attend (or in my case attended). There were dancers of all ages ranging from early teens to late twenties and also dancers of all levels from beginner to advanced.

Cynthia started the workshop off with a fun warm up that included some Zumba moves, then Chris Munar was up next to teach the first class. His combination was to Justin Timberlake’s “Rock Your Body.” Anna Jung taught choreography to Rihanna’s “What’s My Name” for the second class and Andrew Ton finished up with Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow.” After learning each combination, we performed the choreo in two groups – kids and adults. They also had a couple cyphers where everyone could freestyle. It was inspiring to watch the kids dance and I’m sure inspiring for them as well to dance with us.

The video above is from the October 2010 workshop. I’ll update the video once they upload the footage from Saturday’s workshop on their YouTube page. If you want to learn more about Baltimore Dance Crews Project and find out how you can get involved, please visit their website www.baltimoredcp.org and join their Facebook group.

danceDC Weekend Event Guide 12/11-12/12

Culture ShockI’m finally back in DC after a couple weeks of traveling and ready to start dancing again. Tomorrow, I’m hopefully catching a ride to Baltimore for Baltimore Dance Crews Project Community Workshop Dance 4 B’more. Anna Jung of GnC Crew, Andrew Ton and Chris Munar will be teaching class. Only $3 for the day! Sunday, I’ll be checking out the scene at the Culture Shock DC Season 9 Auditions at the CityDance Center in Strathmore. I’m excited to see what the process is like, but bummed that it’s all day so can’t make it to any of Dana Tai Soon Burgess & Company’s performances at the Corcoran. If you’re able to go, let me know how amazing it was. Apparently Paul McCartney was there last week to see them. Also I’ll be posting a note about where you can see The Nutcracker in the DMV so look out for that soon. Keep dancing!
