Drinking and Dancing In DC

Dancing is one of my interests, but I’m also a fan of a good beer or a fancy cocktail. I did, after all, go to Syracuse University which ranked #5 among the nation’s top party schools. That being said, I’d like to share some upcoming opportunities where you can drink to your heart’s content and also feel like you’re a cultured citizen who supports the performing arts. Feel free to share additional happy hour fundraisers and events with a comment!

Shameless Plug: Dance Project and Motion Expressions Concert 2011

As you know from A Different Kind of Dance Post, that I’ve been so consumed by working at Joy of Motion Dance Center that I tend to do non dance related activities in my spare time. I didn’t however want an entire month to go by without a peep from me on danceDC. I swear! I am still around enjoying dance in DC, but not necessarily writing about it all the time. I admit now (and in my headline) that this is a shameless plug for my employer Joy of Motion Dance Center, but don’t tune out just yet. These are two very cool initiatives that I don’t think many people have heard of:

Dance Project: A Choreography Showcase – This performance takes place Saturday, December 3rd at The Jack Guidone Theater (AKA Joy of Motion Dance Center Friendship Heights). It features artists from the DC area presenting new works in a variety of styles including hip hop, modern and jazz.

We’re excited to have a couple college groups participating – Georgetown University Dance Company and Howard University’s Vizion Performance Team, and also psyched about our newly added Favorite Choreographer Prize Package. After the showcase on Saturday, audience members will be invited to cast their ballot for their favorite choreographer. The winner will receive one of two prize packages which includes free studio time or a discounted theater rental. If you’re a dancer, you know this is huge if you don’t have a place to call  home.

If you’re interested in attending the performance or stuffing the ballots to help your favorite performers win, click here to buy tickets.

Motion Expressions Concert 2011: The Heart of Hip Hop – Many people don’t realize that Joy of Motion Dance Center is a nonprofit arts organization. In addition to providing dance education for paying students, we also offer free dance classes to children, teens and seniors in the DC community. When you donate to Joy of Motion Dance Center, this is where your hard earned cash goes – making a difference in people’s lives through dance.

On Tuesday, December 13th, we are presenting our Motion Expressions Concert 2011: The Heart of Hip Hop at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. Hundreds of DC public and charter school children have been invited for free to take part in this interactive performance. This concert is part of our Motion Express outreach program, which brings Joy of Motion Dance Center’s dance education for free to DC school children and teens. There are still seats available to the public if you’re interested in attending. Just RSVP to outreach@joyofmotion.org by December 6th.

DCypher Dance in Ascension: Phase 5

Looking for a fun way to spend your Saturday night? Join Joy of Motion Dance Center’s resident adult hip hop company DCypher Dance as they celebrate their five year anniversary at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, DC on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 8:00 PM. The hip hop concert titled Ascension: Phase 5 features choreography from DCypher Dance member Nikki Gambhir, as well as a host of talented artists including Porche Anthony of Beat Ya Feet Kings – a Washington based hip hop dance crew who competed on Season 4 of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. Other guest choreographers include Chelsea Cooper, Jared Jenkins, Chris Law, Christina Nontanovan, Neil Schwartz and Kevin Simon. The show will also feature special guest performances from local talent.

Artistic Director Natasha Hawkins has been with DCypher Dance since the beginning and has seen it grow in a positive direction. She decided to name the show Ascension: Phase 5 not only to represent the five year anniversary, but also to speak to the rise of the company. “Words can’t express how far this company has grown in five years,” she said. “Phase 5 is meant to say that the company will continue to grow beyond these five years. Just one phase of many years to come.”

DCypher Dance’s performance of Ascension: Phase 5 will take place at the Atlas Performing Arts Center at 1333 H Street NE, Washington, DC. Showtime is 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2011. Adult tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Tickets for children, students and seniors are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Purchase tickets online at www.atlasarts.org or call the Atlas Performing Arts Center box office at 202.399.7993. DCypher Dance is Joy of Motion Dance Center’s resident adult hip hop company.
